Artist Statement
ELIZABETH LEE
I am a Hapa abstract artist working primarily in painting and mixed media. The foundation of my work, where I find the greatest joy, is in abstract expressionism. Nature, and the California coast, where I live, are constant sources of inspiration. Water, boats, and other mystical elements from Chinese cosmology, pop art, as well as themes of spirituality, identity and alienation all coalesce in my art, in various forms.
I use the energy of color to create a visceral experience for the viewer. I believe the canvas has sentience, even if my own projection, and I am in constant conversation with it. While this intent may partially deifies the painting process, I maintain a sense of humor and chronic playfulness. My hope is to fuel each piece with a wanton joy.
My background is also in music, film, theater, printmaking and other arts. These all influence and contribute to the present practice.
